Who wants more? And who hasn't yet had the pleasure? Showing three programmes of films from the interfilm Festival universe. Films that throughout the years have left a lasting impression by having moved us emotionally, or have shaken or even disturbed us. So many of which have lost none of their topicality even after repeated viewing. They seem eternally universal and timeless; unique stories that could be written by life time and again. Several such examples are assembled in these programmes - voilà!
There´s hardly anything as enteratining as a good short film programme. That, above all, the films that make us smile, grin or laugh should be clever, is shown in this programme by multiple personalities, burglars with a sense for rhythm and the natives of an endangered state in the middle of a forest in Germany.
Films that we kept in mind because they moved or even unsettled us emotionally. Because they need to arouse our empathy in the shortest time and let us share their stories.
Already in its eighth year, the Going Underground Festival held in Berlin subway trains is organised by interfilm in cooperation with Berliner Fenster. We'll be showing a retrospective programme of non-stop GU highlights at an open-air event at Pfefferberg. Lots and lots of films and none of them longer than 90 seconds!
Presented during the course of Europe's most important short film festival, Clermont-Ferrand, the "Labo" competition began in 2002 and highlights contemporary trends and cutting-edge developments in global short film production. Join us in our appreciation of their oscillating mix of art and entertainment, breathtaking experiments between tradition and avant-garde that demand a re-evaluation of the short film format and explode customary viewing conventions. The best of last year's "Labo" combines films that are poetically meditative, gorgeously magical and obscurely surreal with innovative aesthetics.
Initially known as distributor and promoter of Spanish and Latino American short films, Candella films has begun to concentrate on programming and presenting British short films, for selection at film festivals around the world. Candella UK not only intends to improve the quality of production and screening of short films in UK, but to promote British short films and their makers in a worldwide network of festivals. Candella UK is supported by the University of Salford. After having shown a selection of Interfilm Berlin shorts at Cornerhouse Cinemas in Manchester UK, we are happy to continue this successful cooperation with Candella. We are proud to present this first folder of the best 7 British short films of 2009. The films show complex characters dealing with difficult decisions, undergoing inner journeys, having incisive encounters or vivid thoughts about love and life, most of them coming up with some unexpected solutions.
With 300 days of sunshine a year, Barcelona not only attracts tourists - filmmakers also find themselves magically drawn to the city's particular light. Let yourself in for a tour of the city that reveals a social side not usually accessible to the average tourist: Immigrants dancing on squares in the Gothic Quarter to make ends meet; people on a gruelling search for affordable housing and light-shunning nocturnals. See the city through the eyes of a very special bicycle courier and come along to the 100 year old amusement park atop Tibidabo, Barcelona's magical mountain.
For the 12th time, Immaginale presents an overview of the current state of short films in Italy. The gamut of this year’s selection runs from visually impressive experiments to narrative forms with a clear present-day focus and undiminished creativity. Almost all films display an existentialist note, regardless of whether they deal with children in the suburbs of Rome, a pantomime artist caught inside a photo, or the crew of a sunken submarine. Perhaps this sudden earnestness is a reflection of deteriorating general conditions: Cuts in state subsidies for culture led to a 25 % decrease in film funds and threaten the existence of many institutions and festivals vital to the Italian short film scene. The support of the Italian Cultural Institute Berlin deserves special gratitude under these circumstances.
Showing familiar situations that derail into absurdity is what makes up the quintessential essence of a Reality Bite's film. New and aesthetically convincing symbioses between coarse reporting styles and artificially constructed mise en scène, are intentionally perplexing and subtly entertaining. While often close to reality, the films are still far removed from usual habits of perception such as linear cinema narration, compassionate or informative documentary rhetoric, or the do-it-yourself ethos of classic video art. Reality Bites really put audience expectations through the mill.
Sometimes pictures tell a story without telling a story and enthral us with their unusual way of combining sound, editing and perspective. In extraordinary footage, real images are mixed with animation, and special effects with plays of light. The dance of the (naked) dead, a journey through Caracas in wild stylistic diversity, fish in the fog and floating women...there is a lot to discover - still.
In extreme situations fears and hopes allow new dimensions to arise. This collection of films utilises impressive imagery to convey unusual stories from the subconscious mind and fantasy worlds in which chairs form a staircase stretching to the sky, a memory leads to underwater visions, black monsters appear out of nowhere, giant crabs attack and oceanic giants maroon in an icy landscape.
No awful summer hits here, rather a hand-picked selection of discerning and cinematic music videos. "Prepare your Coffin" by Tortoise is dark and experimental, while the sci-fi video "Happy Up Here" by Röyksopp is characterized by light and colour. By contrast, Spike Jonze has turned film material from "Fully Flared" into a video for Unkle that is gentle, meditative and surprising. And all who delight in strange situations will adore the Grizzly Bear video. Thanks to all the following companies for their helpful cooperation: basicprod.fr // beatsinternational.com // blurproducciones.com // coalitiongroup.co.uk // dfarecords.com // emimusic.de // gilleke.canalblog.com // jalapenorecords.com // joyriderfilms.com // judesays.com // k7.de // kompakt.fm // nufilms.ca // partizan.com // roughtrade.de // surrender-all.com // secretlycanadian.com // thrilljockey.com // warnermusic.com // warprecords.com

Images move, when carried around.Always a welcome guest - Volker Gerling and his photographic flip-books. In an impressively enchanting show of minimal means, Gerling leafs through his flip-books under a camera and projects the pages onto a screen. The resulting compassionate portraits are accompanied by tales from his wanderings, thoughts on film or photography or reflections on the spaces between pictures.During his annual journey on foot, Gerling shows his flip-books to those he meets along the way - at the side of the road, over a garden fence, at village fairs and in pubs - and returns with new flip-books that tell of yet further fleeting encounters.www.daumenkinographie.de
