"The Boundaries of Freedom“

05 09 2021 - 8 pm

Walls are everywhere: in people's minds as well as on rivers, along the border to Mexico and in the very definition of the "Fortress of Europe". But also in Germany's past as a divided country, borders and their fortifications are a strategy against communication and understanding. On the occasion of the 60th anniversary of the construction of the Berlin Wall, we will explore the barriers, test the impenetrability of concrete and barbed wire and examine their meaningfulness. A rich and varied programme featuring festival winners and favourites gleaned from interfilm's distribution.

The program will be accompanied by Ricardo Brunn, and contemporary witnesses and filmmakers will be invited for discussion.

Registration: Free tickets are available at Mobilekino Berlin

Jonas Riemer

In a folding boat, he fled to Western Germany via Denmark, where the story tips into the dark. His newly acquired freedom turns into disorientation. Life in Neuperlach, a Munich suburb, is quaint. It is an safe neighborhood, where people know and greet each other. Everybody has their own backyard; single car garages are lining the narrow footpaths and everything is groomed. But for some time now that peacefulness is troubled, because refugees are supposed to move in next door. As some of the residents are afraid of the noise to be expected, they are putting up a noise protection wall. „Biotope“ shows the life of the locals and gets to the bottom of the reason for building that wall.
