Focus Africa

About the Focus:

By focusing on filmmaking in sub-Saharan Africa, the festival provides insight into a region that has little or no film schools or funding subsidies. Experience the cultural and aesthetic spectrum of contemporary African short films from Ethiopia, Burkina Faso, Burundi, Ghana, Kenya, Madagascar, Mali, Mozambique, Namibia, Zambia, Senegal, South Africa, Tanzania and Uganda.

Creating African cinema for Africa
, a self-assured cinema – is the idea compelling many of the filmmakers. Their gaze often turned to the hard sides of African life: the oppression of women, child soldiers, religious conflicts, war and poverty – but also to love, rituals, utopian dreams and impressions of every day (city) life.

One programme addresses South African short film
. Here the films sometimes reveal better production conditions as well as a mixture of black and white cultures. In another programme we feature work from non-African directors, revealing a European perspective of Africa. And in cooperation with the “Afrikamera Festival” that is held parallel to ours, we will hold collaborative programmes, parties and a panel discussion.

On the occasion of this year’s focus, the Goethe Institute in Johannesburg invited 7 young African filmmakers from 7 different countries to attend the interfilm Festival in Berlin, all of whom are currently preparing short films as part of the internationally supported AFRICAN METROPOLIS project.
