Wajda, Polanski, Holland, Kieslowski and the “Polish School of Animation” are all well-known cornerstones of Polish cinema. After undergoing a crisis in the 1980s and 90s, Polish cinema has experienced a veritable rebirth in the 21st century. This change for the better would have been inconceivable without the country’s internationally renowned film academies and vibrant short film scene. A new generation of filmmakers is now taking over the helm. Together they are pushing back narrative, formal and aesthetic boundaries with an extraordinary feel for the medium of film and great sensitivity for the unevenness of the social playing field.
