Synopsis:
What's big, grey, noisy, makes a mess and blocks the view of an entire waterfront town? Without giving anything away: It's not a whale.
Three Questions for the Director
1. Short Film has a unique way of telling stories and exploring themes. What is it that fascinates you about the short format?
Odveig Klyve: I see the short film format as an art form of its own, with its own laws. I am also a poet and have written ten collections of poems. As in the poem, the short film can convey both a condensed and an ambiguous message.
2. The program your film is selected for is called “Wasteland Adventure”: What connection do you see between your film and that title?
Odveig Klyve: If we do not take care of the environment, this will ultimately destroy the basis of life for humans, animals and plants. The increasing cruise traffic is a threat to the environment. This is also actualized by a recent report on the ongoing cruise traffic in the world, which among other things documents that one cruise ship emits more NOx gas every day than all traffic passing through a medium-sized city, more ultrafine particles than many thousands of buses, and more sulfur than several million cars. Many countries are affected by environmental pollution caused by cruise traffic.
3. What film has inspried you most to make films yourself and what part of it do you see in your own work?
Odveig Klyve: It is not easy to answer this question. I got very inspired by seeing the very short docs at Interfilm, when I was there in 2018 and 2019 participating with a short fiction film. But if i have to chose one film, I will say "You, the living" (Du levande) by the Swedish filmmaker Roy Andersson. This film is not a documentary, and not a short film, but it's style is close to short films and to short documentaries, consisting of 58 short tableux. There is not a direct link towards my film "View" But I feel that it shares some of the essential feeling about humanity., and the way of visualizing it.
