Synopsis:
A collection of stories about people experiencing fleeting visions of the future after an unexplainable cosmic occurrence.

Three Questions for the Director

1. Short Film has a unique way of telling stories and exploring themes. What is it that fascinates you about the short format?

Pablo Hernando: I think that every story demands for a particular duration. Some ask for more time and others just won't work if you try to expand them. "El ruido solar" has a collage-like structure and I think that particular form can end up being tiring in a long format. That's the main reason why I made it as a short film. Also, in shorts you don't have time to develop characters, so you have to rely on the structure and on a synthetic kind of approach to plotting in order to dramatize. You have to be very precise with the images you choose and I enjoy that challenge.

2. The program your film is selected for is called “Wasteland Adventure”: What connection do you see between your film and that title?

Pablo Hernando: There's a global sense of doom that I tried to capture in "El ruido solar" that I think fits perfectly under that title. We're seeing the world fall apart and it's terrifying and spectacular at the same time. Our imagination runs wild thinking about what's going to happen and we get very anxious and depressed because the scenario we paint in our heads is very hostile. And I agree with that, I don't see a very bright future, but thinking about the particulars of it can be very exciting in a white canvas kind of way.

3. What film has inspried you most to make films yourself and what part of it do you see in your own work?

Pablo Hernando: My all time favourite film is Jurassic Park. That's the only honest answer I can give because all the others in my personal top 10 come and go with time. Obvioulsy I don't see much of Jurassic Park in my work, which is severly lacking in man-eating dinosaurs. However, there's a scene in Jurassic Park where Alan Grant points to a for-the-first-time-in-film-history-believable-CGI-brachiosaurus and says "It's a dinosaur". I always cry during that scene because I do believe that I'm seeing a dinosaur when I watch it. That's something that I think movies should always try to achieve: to show the viewers something that they have never seen and make them feel like it's real. In my own humble, low budget way, that's what I try to do.
