Live Action

A man appears in an empty field, seemingly soulless, and without the ability to speak. The widow made him materialise with her mind, so that he might help her out on the farm. Over time, the man develops a quiet longing to be loved.

Three Questions for the Director

1. Short Film has a unique way of telling stories and exploring themes. What is it that fascinates you about the short format?

Marijana Verhoef: A possibility to create an intimate emotional connection to the audience in such a short time.

2. The program your film is selected for is called “Hier hast du Hände, jetzt kannst du tun.”: What connection do you see between your film and that title?

Marijana Verhoef: BODY tells the story of a mysterious helping creature in the body of a sunburned laborer, working hard every day for an aging widow who owns a farm. The hands are given to the creature so it can work, winning its significance in the heart of the widow by being useful.

3. What film has inspried you most to make films yourself and what part of it do you see in your own work?

Marijana Verhoef: "Bladerunner" and " Five easy pieces". I always go back to stories of outsiders that question what makes us human and what boundaries are we prepared to cross in order to be seen.
