keep shiftin'

Verena Wagner // Germany // 2020 // 21:28 min

A night shift in a glass factory in the middle of the German-Czech borderland. The seasoned crew works the glowing hot glass with gusto.

Three Questions for the Director

1. Short Film has a unique way of telling stories and exploring themes. What is it that fascinates you about the short format?

Verena Wagner: I love that short films give you the opportunity to dive into another world for a short time and very quickly. I also really like the fact that short films are so free in their form and that you can just try different things out.

2. The program your film is selected for is called “Hier hast du Hände, jetzt kannst du tun.”: What connection do you see between your film and that title?

Verena Wagner: It is fascinating with what kind of strength and power the men in my film create something so sensitive with these filigree material of glass - and just with their breath and their bare hands.

3. What film has inspried you most to make films yourself and what part of it do you see in your own work?

Verena Wagner: I don’t have any idols but in general I love films that have a very slow pace, let me forget about room and time, films that rely on the magic of picture and sound rather than on spoken word. I like it very much when films give me the freedom to interpret.
