RETRO All Hail the Super 8

"Alle Macht der Super 8" ("All Hail the Super 8") was the precursor (debuting in 1981) to today's INTERFILM. Released by Kodak in 1965 as a sort of moving image version of their ultra simple Brownie camera, Super 8 promised an affordable and easy way for anyone to shoot a movie. The simplicity of cartridge loading and the point-and-shoot presets of the early cameras meant family holidays and events could be captured and shared with the a minimum of photographic expertise. Throughout the following decade, Super 8's many camera manufacturers and marketeers shifted towards evermore complex and featured designs until, by the late 1970's Super 8 had apparently metamorphsized into a highly sophisticated, even 'professional' format often aimed at only the most serious enthusiast - despite it's limitations remaining essentially the same.

During the mid-eighties, a rough midpoint for the films in this Interfilm archive, things were rapidly coming to an end for Super 8. By 1986 production of all new Super 8 cameras had ceased with new compact video technologies rapidly taking their place.

But there was a new wave of filmmakers ready to grab this suddenly cheap and available format and make use of it. They would often satirise the format's early position as ultra conformist consumer desirable while eschewing the later era's feeble grasping at perfection and professionalism. This program featuring the early Super 8 films of the Interfilm project, now it's 40th iteration, reflects this moment. They represent a Post-Punk ethos of DIY culture that injected high levels of new talent, energy and enthusiasm into a near obsolete format it clearly intended to make, in every respect, it's own.

The Super 8 films in this programme are presented in digitally scanned format.
