German Competition

Films that create space for the unfamiliar and the unexpected, that empower. Films that expose the gaps in both personal and public spheres. They seek connections between the present and the past, between people, living beings and places. From fragments, an entire life takes shape.

The selection brings together narratives that demand to be seen, addressing current topics, making migrant perspectives visible from both sides of the camera, while also showcasing both beautiful and darkly dystopian queer stories, female point of views and the perspectives of filmmakers of colour. Here, filmmakers explore perspectives on a past, present, and potential future Germany, as well as the wider world.

2024 is a strong year for the German Competition, not only in terms of the number of submissions, but also in the urgency of the films, and the remarkable narrative, thematic and aesthetic diversity. To do this justice, we have decided to include a total of four curated programs in the German Competition this year.

Curation: Rebecca Heiler-Ciraudo, Sarah Dombrink, Tavo Ruiz

All films will be shown in their original language with English subtitles, non-German language films will be shown with additional German subtitles.
