The INTERNATIONAL COMPETITION is the festival’s centerpiece, and this year as always we had more than 6,000 entries from 120 countries. We have put together ten programs with 79 films from 39 countries aimed at reflecting the wide diversity of the short films produced in the last two years.
We have assembled 40 animated films and 39 live-action short films that demonstrate tremendous imagination and tell of family conflicts, bizarre encounters and anecdotes from the working world in this section (two programs are dedicated to animated films, five are mixed and the three programs denoted CONFRONTATIONS are dedicated to human rights). The films show life as an all-embracing entity and the little things in everyday situations, which are just as important. One constant throughout all of this is that the filmmakers are not bound by any constraints regarding film medium or creativity. The animated film in particular is very strong, finding new aesthetic forms and narratives along the way.
The INTERNATIONAL COMPETITION invites audiences to take a journey around the globe that is not meant to exhaust viewers, but rather the cinematic experience should act as a means to learn more about the world. Lastly, as of this year, INTERFILM is an official Academy Award® Qualifying Festival. Winning films automatically qualify for the Oscars®, affording them an opportunity to reach a wider audience.
