Political repression, no-holds-barred urbanization, and social adversity take myriad forms – in fiction as well. 1984-like nightmares become ostrich fantasy, crises arise a la Inkheart, and slapstick is concealed behind burkas. Serious subject matter is extracted from the past here using every cinema trick in the book and brought to life in a refreshing fashion.
