After winning a difficult soccer match, Miranda takes a shared taxi home at night. There she is confronted by the everyday violence outside the field.
Three Questions for the Director
1. Short Film has a unique way of telling stories and exploring themes. What is it that fascinates you about the short format?
Selma Cervantes: The thing that I love the most about short formats is the possibility to connect with a character through just a single situation. We don’t need to have a big development to get into a story or to feel the same way as the character does. Maybe we just need to feel related and represented.
2. The program your film is selected for is called “Girls* Riot!": What connection do you see between your film and that title?
Selma Cervantes: Girls Riot is an interesting name for a festival program, I think it represents exactly what girls feel, impotence and rage but those feelings usually lead to revolution. That’s the kind of movement my short film is trying to convey. We need a change in our society. And we, as women, need to be united against patriarchy, sexism and all kinds of inequality.
3. What film has inspired you most to make films yourself and what part of it do you see in your own work?
Selma Cervantes: Honestly I wasn’t into cinema while growing up, but I remember Mean Girls, which was a big part of my teenage years. Maybe that movie isn’t considered “art” but it changed my whole perspective, I began seeing other women for their accomplishments and for their strength and not for their insecurities. It was also the first time that I had heard about feminism and equality. What Tina Fey did with that magnificent script will always be remembered in our generation and forevermore . So I’ll be honest, that’s kind of the first movie that led me into storytelling
