Drei Fragen an die Regie
1. Short Film has a unique way of telling stories and exploring themes. What is it that fascinates you about the short format?
Wang Pengwei: The short format allows complete freedom and total control to the filmmaker without the need to consider financial consequences. It’s the purest form of film expression since it’s existence is based entirely on the will to visually and aurally express an idea/feeling, without the need for any concessions and is beholden to no one. The filmmaker is free to chase whatever expression they feel interested in at the moment and believes could make for something interesting/moving/beautiful/disturbing.
2. The program your film is selected for is called “Stepping Into the Void”: What connection do you see between your film and that title?
Wang Pengwei: The words most often associated with my film by viewers is “dream”. We step into the void each time we drift asleep, with no guarantee that we would return. But the sleep is alluring because it allows us a peak into something supernatural, which is the dream. I set out to create something which would be haunting, outrageous and would give the feeling of being fractured from within. So the void is the perfect headspace for the viewer of this short film.
3. What film has inspried you most to make films yourself and what part of it do you see in your own work?
Wang Pengwei: One of my favorite films of all time is Zulawski’s Possession. Raw, explosive, highly disturbing, emotional and philosophical, some images are etched into the mind forever. It’s a masterpiece of personal expression. I hope I am even a fraction as honest as Zulawski in his films, he lays bare his true feelings. He’s frightened but he refuses to look away. That is exactly what I felt while making this film.
