1. Short Film has a unique way of telling stories and exploring themes. What is it that fascinates you about the short format?
Zhannat Alshanova: I think short format really teaches you to be economical yet efficient with your story telling. All the nuances and inflexions are more pronounced. And of course some of the great stories can be told only in the short form.
2. The program your film is selected for is called “Mapping New Roads”: What connection do you see between your film and that title?
Zhannat Alshanova: In my film we follow the aftermath of Indira’s decision to relocate from Kazakhstan to the UK. But if we drop the geographical aspect, it is a film about the emotional struggle of the character who decides to change the path, but then plays back. I guess the road doesn’t always go in one straight way, it’s more like a maze.
3. What film has inspried you most to make films yourself and what part of it do you see in your own work?
Zhannat Alshanova: For me it’s more about moments, than films. It could be a word, a movement, a shot, sound that really pierces you. It’s a moment that makes you feel something. The most valuable ones are those that stay with you afterwards. Sometimes I don’t remember the plot, but the aftertaste of the film. I’d love my films to stay with the viewer for some time.
