Drei Fragen an die Regie

1. Short Film has a unique way of telling stories and exploring themes. What is it that fascinates you about the short format?

Bruno Moreschi & Gabriel Pereira: Our film uses the short film format as a way of presenting and discussing a research that moves between art, algorithms, and critique. As such, we’re fascinated by the versatility of this format, how it can present our process and generate questions across different spaces: from film festivals to academic conferences, art galleries, and public education.

2. The program your film is selected for is called “Mensch Maschine": What connection do you see between your film and that title?

Bruno Moreschi & Gabriel Pereira: Recoding Art is about complicating human and machine ways of seeing. What if we weren’t so sure about what we see in an artwork? What if we could see artworks like we hadn’t seen anything like it before? But also, how could artworks challenge how computer vision sees the world?

3. What film has inspired you most to make films yourself and what part of it do you see in your own work?

Bruno Moreschi & Gabriel Pereira: Not exactly a film, in the traditional sense, but our short film is somewhat inspired by the installation of the Philips Pavilion at the 1958 Brussels World's Fair. There, "Poème électronique”, an electronic music composed by Edgard Varèse, was presented alongside pictures by architect Le Corbusier. “Poème électronique” is an inspiration because it used sounds that weren’t considered to be music, much like the unexpected results from AI we analyze in the film.
