Synopsis:
Der selbstisolierte Protagonist beobachtet in einer Welt voller Rucksacktouristen einen fernen Stern. Inmitten einer surrealen Wüste muss er sich schließlich dem Zusammenhang zwischen Katze, Backpacker und Stern stellen.

Drei Fragen an die Regie

1. Short Film has a unique way of telling stories and exploring themes. What is it that fascinates you about the short format?

Tobi Trebeljahr: Short film making relates to long form films the same way poetry relates to prose. I very much enjoy the challenge of making every frame count. There is no room or time for filler or unnecessary shots. Every decision counts.

2. The program your film is selected for is called “Die lange Nacht des abwegigen Films”: What connection do you see between your film and that title?

Tobi Trebeljahr: The way we came up with MULM differed from traditional ways of plot writing. We didn't have a specific goal or meaning in mind. Instead, the process was a lot of stream of consciousness idea gathering, and then assembling those vague ideas into something resembling a story. We never intended to achieve something that could be fully deciphered or understood, instead opting for a certain mood, as well as evoking a couple of open concepts. The resulting weirdness makes it fit nicely into the festivals so called "abwegige Filme" program.

3. What film has inspried you most to make films yourself and what part of it do you see in your own work?

Tobi Trebeljahr: As odd as it sounds, one of my biggest inspirations is the old film "Asterix and cleopatra". It employs something that can be seen as well is old fleischer cartoons, and what I would call "rhythmical filmmaking".When thinking about possible stories to tell, what I like to do is think about the events unfolding in the same way as a music track does. With a buildup, a hook, a bridge, a crescendo, and so forth. A lot of what Carol and I have done so far seems to have, similar to those of animated films, a sort of inaudible rhythm to guide the pacing, even if there is no music in a scene.
