Ein Mitternachtsfilm mit einer Reihe halluzinatorischer und surrealer Bilder.

Drei Fragen an die Regie

1. Short Film has a unique way of telling stories and exploring themes. What is it that fascinates you about the short format?

Joe Cappa: I think effective short films are about the world and atmosphere the artist creates. In literature I gravitate toward short sci fi stories, because they basically exist as thought experiments. Each story is a world or an alternate reality shaped around a bizarre concept the artist wanted to tackle. For me, I like the idea of world building and that's what attracted me to the format.

2. The program your film is selected for is called “Die lange Nacht des abwegigen Films”: What connection do you see between your film and that title?

Joe Cappa: Haha! I can't think of a better program descriptor to prepare my audience for what's in store. It's a long night and it's absurd. Ghost Dogs is a comedy horror. It was my attempt to push both genres into the realm of the absurd.

3. What film has inspried you most to make films yourself and what part of it do you see in your own work?

Joe Cappa: Personally, Ghost Dogs was a lesson in animation, storytelling, and pacing. I revere films that manage to bring you along for the ride after multiple viewings, and I think that's because of their powerful use of storytelling and pacing. Ghost Dogs definitely borrows elements that left an impression on me as an adolescent and have been part of my viewing diet after all these years. The Shining is clearly a big inspiration for its effective score. Gremlins was something I came back to over and over as I was developing the Ghost Dogs for their ambiguous nature. And Poltergeist is the gold standard to me for its ability to capture horror, the absurdity, and the use of comedy. It's such a bizarre movie.
