Drei Fragen an die Regie
1. Short Film has a unique way of telling stories and exploring themes. What is it that fascinates you about the short format?
Victor Velasco: In short films, every second counts. There's no time for a long exposition or setup. The audience arrives in the middle of the story and has to figure out what's happening on the march. This dynamic format is what I think makes short films unique. In short films we only see a glimpse of the lives of the characters. The audience creates a whole universe in their minds, even though we only saw a bit of it. This sensation is what I love about shortfilms.
2. The program your film is selected for is called “Die lange Nacht des abwegigen Films”: What connection do you see between your film and that title?
Victor Velasco: "The long night of the absurd" is a perfect name. I started developing the idea with the absurdist premise of junkie kid asking to a businessman to take some soup in the middle of the street, then the story turns into a more surreal and dramatic tone but the intention of an absurd starting point was there from the beginning, so it's great to know that the final short film managed to convey that feeling.
3. What film has inspired you most to make films yourself and what part of it do you see in your own work?
Victor Velasco: "Simple Blood" (1984) by Joel and Ethan Coen was one of those key films that inspired me to pursue my filmmaking career. The fact they produced, directed and edited their own first feature with a clear vision on such a difficult theme, always amazes me. In my films I can see the absurd how an absurd situation escalates to something bigger than what's expected.
