Animation, Live Action

1. Short Film has a unique way of telling stories and exploring themes. What is it that fascinates you about the short format?

Shiva Sadegh Asadi: Short film is the realm of experience and innovation. It provides opportunities to explore new forms of expression. Particularly when it comes to short animation, most of the production stage can be done by one person and this makes the production process quite close to the process of creating visual arts such as painting. Having a touch of individuality, this kind of films can reflect the creator’s inner world. For me, short film is a way of self- expression and discovery, a way to create a world of my own, gradually and step by step.

2. The program your film is selected for is called “Step Into the Void”: What connection do you see between your film and that title?

Shiva Sadegh Asadi: Interesting! The answer depends on what other films are also chosen for this particular program and what they have in common with each other, but I think this topic suggests some sort of insecurity as if there is no ground to stand firmly on and there is nothing to relay.

3. What film has inspried you most to make films yourself and what part of it do you see in your own work?

Shiva Sadegh Asadi: The answer of this question has its roots in my childhood and my memories of going to cinema and watching cartoons on TV. As a child, I was interested in drawing and I used to tell my personal stories via related images that I drew by pen on calendar sheets. I was inspired by 80s films and cartoons, including Japanese anime, Disney cartoons and also those masterpieces of Zagreb animation school that sometimes were shown on TV. Occasionally, some short animations were also screened and some of them had different and unique styles. I wished to make animated films in the future and had the feeling that I will be able to create something of my own. I remember when I was 15, I took a drawing course for the first time and I got familiar with the world of visual art and painting. I knew more about art history and my artistic taste gradually changed. I decided to be a visual artist, probably a painter or a graphic designer. Years later as an art student, I encountered some animations that were totally different from everything that I’d seen before! They were created by different techniques and from a painterly point of view, they were really rich! At that time I learned that animation could be as impressive as the best samples of fine art! I rediscovered animation expressive potential as a form of art and as a way of self-expression.
