1. Short Film has a unique way of telling stories and exploring themes. What is it that fascinates you about the short format?
Noah Erni: Short movies are the ideal place to push bounderies and try new ideas and ways of storytelling. Because even if you fail, you at least didin’t waste too much time of your audience.
2. The program your film is selected for is called “Die lange Nacht des abwegigen Films”: What connection do you see between your film and that title?
Noah Erni: I’m very happy that there is a programm for all the weird movies outthere and that my movie can be part of it. A Heimat-Horror-film about cheese might be a difficult genre for festival programmers. Cheese is in Switzerland more than just a milk product, it is stereotyped to a national symbol of an ideal country of farmers and mountains. But as it slowly reveals, the milk industry might not be that beautiful and the country not that ideal as we told. Therefore, I made my movie to don’t leave all the symbolic interpretation of cheese to the tourist agencies, cheese companies and nationalists. So, my film might be absurd, but cheese making was gross before – even though the product is delicious.
3. What film has inspried you most to make films yourself and what part of it do you see in your own work?
Noah Erni: I like David Lynch’s movies and how he creates these dream like atmospheres. I tried to give my movie these nightmare touches, where somehow fear and comedy comes together. Further also the short movie "Acid Rain“ from Tomasz Popakul and how he used these trippy colours, inspired me to use these odd colours in „the tale of the green cheese".
