When the Moon was Gibbous

Erika Grace Strada // Dänemark // 2021 // 03:41 min

Eine surreale Welt auf einem anderen Planeten. Ein großes Monster wird von menschenähnlichen Lebewesen bekämpft.

Drei Fragen an die Regie

1. Short Film has a unique way of telling stories and exploring themes. What is it that fascinates you about the short format?

Erika Grace Strada: To put it bluntly, in general I much prefer a short format when it comes to watching independent films, because the filmmaker is forced to remain concise and effective. If one is confident enough of their conception, the stronger the idea will transmit in a short span of time, instead of diluting and dragging with the hopes of getting the point across.

2. The program your film is selected for is called “Hier hast du Hände, jetzt kannst du tun.”: What connection do you see between your film and that title?

Erika Grace Strada: It's not the first time I've been put in a category that is reminiscent of the "abwegigen" theme. My first strong guess is in relation to the pretty obvious sexual designs of the creatures and how the style is reminiscent of the pulp magazines of the 70s-80s.
Another possibility is that the story transmits a sense of whimsicality that is at the same time off-putting, a relatable sense of bittersweetness in an alien universe.

3. What film has inspried you most to make films yourself and what part of it do you see in your own work?

Erika Grace Strada: The films that clearly inspired me the most are in the ones directed by René Laloux during the 80s, specifically Gandahar, Planet Sauvage and Les Maitres du Temps. They are not movies that I directly grew up with, but they feel as if they've been part of my childhood all along, given the timeless quality that is intrinsic of these films. Through the visual style and the child-like telling of his stories, he seminates a deeper and more metaphyscal meaning that is hidden within the movie. This exact characteristic has always tickled me, since the low-budget animation, script and overall direction of his films lowers your guard, until you are hit unexpectadely by very profound themes about our relation as a species to the universe and to each other.
Thus, I find it very inspiring how he's not afraid to transmit his thoughts with the risks that come with economic limitations and the stiffness of a movie production. It's definetely a pleasant and important reminder to every aspiring director.
