SP 14 Europe Unknown: Sámi Shorts

In the north of Norway, Sweden, Finland and Russia stretches Sápmi. For centuries the indigenous Sámi people have suffered systematic oppression from these governments and only in recent decades are finally beginning to enjoy a level of official recognition. It’s little wonder that the Sámi’s rich traditions, music and numerous languages have also begun to grab the attention of young filmmakers. The short films presented here examine this people’s conflicted history of suppression and its cultural pride via historical and poetic perspectives, and musical expression ranging from modern rap to traditional Sámi “joik” folk singing.
