Over a 1/3 of the pieces were produced on film, the rest on video. The great majority of the films in the competitions are on celluloid. This illustrates the digital-technical advancement in multi-media: an abundance of artists assail the selection committees with their work, although aspirations and end-products don't always correspond. But sometimes charm, a passion for playing and story do convince.
170 films from 28 countries were selected to compete for prizes in the following categories: International Competition, Local Heroes, Children's Film, Competition against Violence and Intolerance and the Audience Competition, EJECT. There is a new competition called Realities which is for the best documentary film and the intention here was to lend this category more weight. The best sound category is also new.
France, a country that must be the most engaged in terms of short film, has been our choice for the widest-ranging national focal point. The short film enjoys a considerably higher profile in France than it does here and this is clearly demonstrated by the festival in Clermont Ferrand which, with more than 130,000 viewers, is the biggest in the short film world. Something quite unimaginable over here at present.

By contrast, the short film culture in Italy appears to be a lot less supported than it is in Germany. But having said that, excellent short films are to be found there time and again. In co-operation with the Italian Cultural Institute, the Italian film festival, L´IMMAGINALE, which has been in existence for five years already, is taking part in our festival for the first time. We also intend to keep this going in coming years.

Co-operating with the German Kinemathek Bonn, topical short films from Israel will be shown in REEL IL. Australian highlights will be presented by Malcolm Blaylock, the festival director of the St-Kilda short film festival, and the Cottbus film festival opens a window towards Eastern Europe. This year, we look forward to Corinna Schnitt and her programme ´Prima leben´ (‘Excellent Living'). Once again, there will be a video and poetry slam as well as poetry short films from the ZEBRA Poetry Film Festival which with our help founded among other things the literature workshop last July. As always, the merciless reality in Reality Bites! will be given a chance and the popular Music Clips by Cinefeel, the Lions of the Cannes Roll and Erotic Tales from the Ziegler Film Production will also be shown.

As far as the festival cinemas are concerned, you can once again look forward to the Filmkunsthaus Babylon, to the Hackesche Höfe Film Theatre and to the Acud Cinema. This year EJECT V will take place on two evenings in the Zeiss Planetarium on the Prenzlauer Allee. The festival club ”zentral berlin” opens its doors every evening for specials, dance floor and chill out. In addition, Reingold is presenting the festival programme.

For the second time, the German short film prize will be awarded within the framework of the festival. The prize-giving will take place on Wednesday 6 Nov in the Kulturbrauerei cinemas.
