Just like gaps in old photos can be completed with a few strokes, animation also makes it possible in documentaries to fill in gaps and talk about things that cause painful images. In return, animation quietly creeps into the environment, adds charm to images gone yellow or tells stories of home and alienation in unique ways. Reality, with all its urgency, coldness and hope, is not painted over, but newly recognizable.
