Dancing has been featured on screen for as long as cinema has been around. A delicate connection exists between image and movement, as both make do without language and achieve their unique effect precisely for that reason. And yet, there is a sort of quiet opposition between the two art forms. The pairing of the camera’s need for geometric rigor and the immediacy of bodily experience amounts to a collision between worlds. Here is a space where opera can encounter street dance, where boundaries between painting, dance, and cinema are blurred, and where a street sweeper can become a nimble star.
