Horror visions are not hard to find – after all, humans are constantly producing gripping nightmares from trauma real and imagined. However, it takes a sensitive touch to turn the schematic feel of dream images into immersive cinema experiences. Monsters and other representations of anxiety have to strike a balance between the visually disturbing and the unseen, whose emptiness serves as a screen upon which we project our fears. Hidden chasms and repressed instincts make their presence felt in a discomforting confrontation with the subconscious.
