The end of the Cold War made average “East Germans” feel like “Hans in Luck” at first, but capitalism and the profit imperative quickly caught up with them. The grocery budget is tight and the unemployment office demands modern flexibility. Life, both on the job and in private, becomes characterized by the struggle to survive. The credo: every man for himself, royal rumble style. Memories of the summer of ’87 resurface, as families drove to the Baltic coast for vacation, in Trabis pulling trailers.
