Right up front on the left in Babylon Mitte’s main cinema one can find the little, unassuming console of Germany’s only orchestral cinema organ still preserved at its original location. Built in an age when the “talky” was in the process of irreversibly replacing the silent film, the theater organ in Babylon was the largest in the country back then. Every year with Short & Silent, interfilm revives the tradition: current silent films are given the live-score treatment in the spirit of a bygone era. Past and present collide, creating fruitful ruptures in a new cinematic space.
