IC 09 CONFRONTATIONS - Human Rights Films: Out of Control

Loss of control and the fear of losing control are key terms of our era. In the digital world, society splinters, certain currents in identity politics lead to further and further fragmented groups, inequality and corresponding unequal treatment divide people – each from the other and each with a divided self. Traumatic experiences are part of everyday life for many people. If films are dreams, then the leap to trauma is not very far, at least not in German (i.e. from “Traum” to “Trauma”). Cinema has always exhibited a capacity to portray the subconscious. To expose one’s self to the latter on the big screen means to experience overload and loss of control first-hand, while simultaneously being granted an opportunity for meaningful engagement with these issues and fears.
