SP 04 Eastern Front / Western Front: Everyday between the Fronts

While some claim that "it wasn't all that bad" and one can by all means report about "amusing life in the GDR", there was also no avoiding state control and interference. Wherever deficit and censorship prevail, imagination runs rife. This programme shows everyday life in East Germany, swinging between contained risks and the desire to break free. By the 1980's at the latest, the dilemma of whether to stay in the East or possibly risk one's life by leaving to an unknown country called the West was an issue that threatened to tear apart most families and even society at large. These films bear witness to attempts at subtle forms of critique, which sometimes succeeded but more often than not led to prohibition or exile.
